Creative Grass Mowing

You can achieve a striped finish on garden lawns by grass mowing in alternately different directions. Cylinder mowers, with eight to twelve blades and fitted with a roller, are best for this.

Parallel-striped garden lawns, with alternating bands of light and dark grass, give a garden a formal, perfectly controlled look.

If a small lawn is striped lengthways, it makes a garden seem longer. Similarly, a long narrow lawn striped crossways takes on an additional feeling of width.

Dealing with Edges

1. During the winter, lawn edges become ragged and often encroach on the flower borders. Cut them to shape in spring using a half-moon edging iron.
2. Throughout the rest of the growing season, use long-handled edging shears to trim the lawn edges after each grass mowing. Rake up all the clippings.
3. Mechanical edging tools take much of the physical effort out of edge trimming, but they don't produce quite such a good finish as shears.
4. Aluminium edging strips keep the garden lawns in check. Make a slot then firm it in place, keeping the top edge just below the surface of the lawn.

Grass Mowing - Trimming Grass Around Obstacles

Use long-handled lawn shears to cut any grass which the lawnmower cannot reach. If you don't mind bending down, ordinary shears are equally good.

1. Nylon cord trimmers — 'strimmers' — require much less effort to use and can deal with even the roughest grass, though the cut is less neat.
2. Battery-operated cordless trimmers are easy and convenient to use in a small garden, making a quite clean cut with a scissor-like action.

Tree Roots and Suckers

As trees and shrubs age, their roots swell and may lift grass into a hump. Mary also produce suckers — a hazard when grass mowing. Treat as for bumps. Cut and peel back the turf, then chop off the offending root.

Fork over the soil and re-level. Roll the turf back and firm it down. Where bulky tree roots break through it may be best to re-shape the lawn around the root and grow ground cover plants instead.
